Interesting and informative
I am building my library for winter reading and studying so I can have my garden and house planned out and so that I can learn during the winter when the weather is to bad to be out..
Anyone that's read "How to win friends and influence people" will see a great deal of parallel here. It's an interesting book that's pretty easy to read and the material is still applicable to modern society.
great little manual of etiquette, and a fun and interesting read
Even though somewhat dated in places, the rules of etiquette haven't really changed over time. The author does a good job of outlining what it is to be a person of good character.
If you want to recover your manners, this is the "go to" manual of etiquette. The context may be the 18th and 19th Centuries when they had drawing rooms, balls etc. but it's still possible to judiciously apply most of the recommended behaviors to the 21st Century.
While this book is certainly dated, the ideal of politeness and conduct does not age. The author is amazingly accurate in predicting some of the problems in our modern society and explains why they will occur. I have have two young sons and this book will provide as both a look at history and a model of present day conduct.
Yes, this is dated. Yes, this includes some non-politically correct wording (in its defense it was PC for its time). This book, however, still has a lot of useful etiquette lessons for today's world.
So either take it as a good book showing all of the mannerisms from a time long gone or take it as a good book with still-relevant lessons. Either will apply.
